Convert plain text into Base64-encoded strings in your browser. Useful for embedding data in URLs, JSON payloads or configuration files.
What Base64 is for
Base64 represents any data using only 64 safe characters: A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /, plus = for padding. That lets binary data or text with special characters travel through systems designed for plain text: email, JSON, URLs, HTTP headers and config files.
Common uses
- HTTP Basic authentication sends
username:passwordBase64-encoded in a header. - Data URLs embed small images directly in HTML or CSS, such as
data:image/png;base64,…. - Email attachments are Base64-encoded inside the message.
- JSON Web Tokens (JWTs) use a URL-safe variant of Base64 for their header and payload.
- Kubernetes secrets and many config systems store values Base64-encoded.
Base64 is not encryption
Anyone can decode Base64 instantly; it hides nothing. Never use it to protect passwords or personal data. If something you are handling is “encrypted with Base64”, it is not encrypted at all.
Size and Unicode
Base64 output is about a third larger than the input, because every 3 bytes become 4 characters. This encoder converts your text to UTF-8 first, so accented letters, Devanagari, Chinese and emoji encode correctly. Some simple encoders fail on those characters.
| Input | Base64 |
|---|---|
| Man | TWFu |
| Hello | SGVsbG8= |
| Hi | SGk= |
The = signs at the end are padding that makes the length a multiple of four. To reverse the process, use the Base64 Decoder.
