{"name":"PDUtilities"}Compress JSON by stripping all unnecessary whitespace and line breaks, producing the smallest valid representation for production use.
What minifying does
Minifying removes every space, tab and line break that is not inside a string. The data is identical: same keys, same values, same order. The text is shorter. The tool shows how much smaller the result is; for indented JSON the saving is often 20–40%.
When minified JSON is useful
- Embedding JSON in other places: an environment variable, an HTML attribute, a single line of a CSV or log file, or a command-line argument.
- Storing JSON in a database column where space adds up across millions of rows.
- Static data files shipped with a website or app, where every kilobyte affects load time.
- Pasting a payload into a tool that expects a single line.
When it matters less than you think
Web servers usually compress responses with gzip or Brotli, which squeeze out repeated whitespace very effectively. For JSON sent over HTTP, minifying typically saves only a few percent after compression. It still helps, but readable JSON is often a fine trade-off for APIs you need to debug.
Minifying also validates. If the input is not valid JSON you will see the error and its position instead of a broken result. To expand minified JSON again, use the JSON Formatter.
