When merging PDFs is useful

Many applications, whether for a job, a visa, a university or a loan, ask for “a single PDF” containing several documents: a CV with certificates, a form with supporting statements, or a set of monthly statements. Merging puts them into one file in the order the reader expects, so nothing is missed and there is one attachment instead of six.

Step by step

  1. Select two or more PDF files. You can add them in several rounds; new files are appended to the end of the list. Each file shows a preview of its first page and its page count.
  2. Arrange the order with the up and down arrows next to each file. The file at the top becomes the first pages of the merged document.
  3. Need only part of a file? Type the pages to keep in its Pages box, such as 1-3, 5. Leave it as all to include every page. The total page count of the merged PDF is shown under the list.
  4. Remove anything you added by mistake with the remove button.
  5. Click Merge and download the combined PDF.

What is preserved

Merging copies pages exactly as they are, so text stays selectable, images keep their original quality and page sizes are not changed. A mix of A4 and Letter pages, or portrait and landscape pages, will appear just as they did in the source files. Document-level extras, such as the original files' bookmarks, outlines and form-field logic, are not carried over, because each source document defines them differently.

Common problems

  • “Could not merge these PDFs.” One of the files is usually password-protected or damaged. Open it in a PDF reader; if it asks for a password, it needs to be unlocked by its owner first.
  • The merged file is too large. File sizes add up. Run the result through Compress PDF to bring it under an upload limit.
  • You only need part of a document. Type the pages you want in that file's Pages box; there is no need to extract them first.
  • Your source documents are photos. Convert them with JPG to PDF first, then merge them with your other PDFs.

Name files with a leading number before you add them (01-cv.pdf, 02-degree.pdf…). It makes the order obvious at a glance and avoids mistakes when you have many files.

Privacy

The documents people merge are often personal, such as identity papers, certificates and financial records. The files are combined in your browser's memory and are not uploaded anywhere. Practical limits come from your device: dozens of ordinary documents are fine, but merging several hundred megabytes on an older phone may be slow.
