Why convert Unicode to Preeti?

Unicode is the modern standard for Nepali: it works on every phone, website and computer without any special font. But Preeti is still everywhere in offices, printing presses and older templates. If a form, a PageMaker layout or a colleague's document uses Preeti, Unicode text pasted into it shows up as boxes or the wrong letters. Converting to Preeti fixes that.

How to use the result

  1. Paste or type your Unicode Nepali above.
  2. Copy the Preeti result. It looks like random English letters, which is expected.
  3. Paste it into Word, Excel, PageMaker or any program where the Preeti font is installed.
  4. Select the pasted text and change its font to Preeti.

If you see English letters after changing the font, Preeti isn't installed on that computer. Install the font, or keep the text in Unicode with a font such as Kalimati or Mangal.

What the converter takes care of

  • The ि sign, which Unicode stores after its consonant but Preeti types before it, so कि becomes ls.
  • Reph (र्), which Preeti types after the letter it sits on, so कर्म becomes sd{.
  • Half letters and conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, द्ध, श्र and न्न, using Preeti's own shapes.
  • Vowels such as आ, ओ and औ, which Preeti builds from more than one key.
  • Digits and punctuation, including the danda (।).
