When characters count more than words

Many fields on the web limit characters, not words: search result snippets, social media posts, text messages, app store descriptions, form fields and database columns. The counter shows the total with and without spaces, live as you type, so you can trim to fit before you hit the limit.

Common character limits

WhereLimit (approx.)
Page title shown in Google results50–60 characters
Meta description shown in Google results150–160 characters
Post on X (Twitter), standard account280 characters
Single SMS (plain Latin characters)160 characters
Single SMS with Unicode (e.g. Devanagari, emoji)70 characters
Instagram caption2,200 characters
YouTube video title100 characters

Search engine limits are really pixel widths, so wide letters like W and M use up the space faster than narrow ones like i and l. Staying under the character figures above keeps most titles and descriptions from being cut off with “…”.

With or without spaces?

Most online limits count spaces. Some academic and translation work counts characters without spaces. The counter shows both so you can match whichever rule applies. Line breaks count as characters too, which is easy to forget when pasting a multi-line bio into a single field.

Emoji and non-Latin scripts

Some platforms count an emoji or an accented character as two characters, because of how the text is stored internally. If you are right at a limit and your text includes emoji, leave a few characters of margin.
