Instant capitals
Type or paste text and it is converted to capital letters immediately, ready to copy. The conversion follows Unicode rules, so accented and non-English letters work too: “café” becomes “CAFÉ”, and the German ß becomes “SS”.
When uppercase is the right choice
- Short labels and headings, such as buttons, section labels and signage, where a few capitalised words stand out.
- Codes and identifiers: postcodes, licence plates, booking references, product SKUs and country codes are conventionally capitalised.
- Forms that require block capitals. Many printed and online forms ask for names in capitals so they can be read reliably.
- Constants in code, often written as
MAX_FILE_SIZE.
When to avoid it
Long passages in capitals are slower to read, because words lose their distinctive outline, and in emails and messages they read as shouting. Screen readers may also spell some all-caps words letter by letter. For emphasis in body text, bold usually works better.
