How to Fill In and Sign a PDF Without Printing It

Updated 16 October 2026 · 6 min read

Add your details to a PDF form, fix mistakes, and place a drawn, typed or photographed signature, all in your browser.

A landlord sends a lease, a school sends a consent form, an employer sends an offer letter, and each one says “please sign and return”. You do not need a printer and a scanner for that. You can type into the PDF, sign it and send it back in a few minutes.

Step 1: Fill in the form

Open Edit PDF. It has three modes:

  • Add text: click on a blank line or box and type your name, address or date. Drag the handle to line it up.
  • Edit text: click an existing line to change it, for example a wrong date or a misspelt name. The old text is removed from the file and your text is drawn in a matching font.
  • White-out: drag a box over anything that should go, such as an old address.

Use the bar above the page to change the font, size or colour. Download the edited PDF when you are done.

Step 2: Create your signature

Open Sign PDF and add the filled-in PDF. Then choose how to make your signature:

MethodBest for
DrawSigning on a phone or tablet with your finger or a stylus
TypeA quick, neat signature in a handwriting style; the Plain style works for initials and dates
UploadYour real ink signature: sign on white paper, take a photo, and the paper is made transparent

Step 3: Place it and download

  1. Go to the right page with the page arrows.
  2. Click where the signature belongs.
  3. Drag it into position and pull the corner handle to resize it.
  4. Add it to any other pages that need it, for example initials on every page.
  5. Download the signed PDF.

Fill in first, sign last. Once a document is signed, changing its text can raise questions with the person receiving it.

Is this signature legally valid?

This places an image of your signature on the document, which is a simple electronic signature. Laws such as the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS regulation accept electronic signatures for many everyday documents, including forms, quotes, leases and letters. Some documents, such as certain property, court or notarised papers, need a certified digital signature or ink on paper. If you are unsure, ask the person who sent it what they accept.

Common questions

  • The form is a scan. Scans are pictures, so use Add text and White-out rather than Edit text.
  • My language is not displayed correctly. The editing fonts cover Latin letters, and most also cover Greek and Cyrillic. You are told before saving if a character cannot be drawn.
  • Is my document uploaded? No. Editing and signing happen entirely in your browser.
