Mean, median, mode and range

Paste a list of numbers, separated by commas or new lines, and the calculator returns the count, mean, median, mode and range. Together they describe a data set much better than any single figure.

Mean or median?

The mean uses every value, which makes it sensitive to outliers. The median ignores how extreme the highest and lowest values are. Salaries are the classic example: if nine people earn 30,000 and one earns 1,000,000, the mean is 127,000, but the median of 30,000 is far more representative. When data has a few very large or very small values, report the median.

With an even number of values there is no single middle value, so the median is the mean of the two middle values: the median of 1, 3, 5, 7 is 4.

When the mode is useful

The mode is the only average that works for categories, such as the most common shoe size sold, and it highlights clusters in the data. If no value repeats, the calculator shows “No mode” rather than picking one arbitrarily. If several values tie for most frequent, the data is multimodal.
