What Lorem Ipsum is

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing since at least the 1500s. It comes from a passage of Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, written in 45 BC, with words cut and altered so that it reads like Latin but means nothing. Designers use it to show how a layout will look with real-length text, without readers getting distracted by what the words say.

Use placeholder text wisely

• Check it is all replaced before launch. Search your site or document for “lorem” before publishing. Placeholder text left on a live page looks unprofessional and is a common sign of an unfinished site.
• Test with realistic lengths. Real headlines are sometimes much longer than designers expect, and translated text, such as German, can be 30% longer than English.
• Use real content when you can. Lorem Ipsum is fine for early layouts, but real words reveal problems with hierarchy and readability that filler hides.
