JPG, PNG or WebP: which should you use?
Most everyday image problems come down to using the wrong format: a screenshot saved as JPG that looks smudged, a photo saved as PNG that is too large to email, or a WebP from a website that an older program will not open. This converter moves an image between the three formats every browser understands, so you can pick the right one for the job.
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Lossy | No | Photos, scans, anything that must open everywhere |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Screenshots, logos, text, diagrams, images you will edit |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Websites and apps where size matters |
How it works
- Load one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images, up to 50 at a time.
- Choose the target format and click Convert. Switching format later keeps your images in the list, so you can convert the same set again.
- Check each output size, then download the files one by one or all together as a ZIP.
JPG and WebP output is saved at 90% quality, which keeps photos looking like the original while saving space. PNG output is lossless. When converting to JPG, transparent pixels are filled with white because JPG cannot store transparency.
Rules of thumb
- If it came from a camera, JPG or WebP.
- If it has text, sharp lines or flat colours, PNG.
- If it needs a transparent background, PNG or WebP.
- If it is going on your own website, WebP.
- If you are not sure the recipient's software is modern, JPG.
Converting will not change pixel dimensions. To make the image physically smaller, use the Image Resizer as well.
