Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG is excellent for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but it is a poor container for photographs: a PNG photo can easily be 5–10 times larger than the same picture as a JPG. Converting to JPG is the quickest way to get a photo under an upload limit or make it email-friendly.

What happens during conversion

  • Transparency becomes white. JPG cannot store transparent pixels, so transparent areas, such as the background of a cut-out logo, are filled with white.
  • High quality is used. The JPG is saved at 92% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original for photos while being far smaller.
  • Dimensions stay the same. The image is not resized.
  • Batches are fine. Add as many as 50 PNGs at once and download all the JPGs as a ZIP.

When not to convert

  • Logos or icons with transparent backgrounds that will sit on coloured pages. The white box will show. Keep PNG, or use WebP, which supports transparency.
  • Screenshots of text and code. JPG adds faint smudges around sharp, high-contrast edges. PNG keeps them crisp.
  • Images you will keep editing. Every JPG save loses a little more detail.
