What WebP is
WebP is an image format created by Google for the web. It supports both lossy compression, like JPG, and lossless compression and transparency, like PNG, usually in noticeably smaller files: often 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG. Every modern browser displays WebP, which is why many websites now serve it by default.
Two directions, three options
| Direction | Use it when |
|---|---|
| JPG/PNG → WebP | Preparing images for your own website or app to make pages load faster |
| WebP → JPG | A program, printer or form will not accept WebP; you need a photo that opens anywhere |
| WebP → PNG | You need lossless output, or the WebP has transparency you want to keep |
Why you sometimes need to convert away from WebP
Images saved from websites often turn out to be WebP, even when the address ends in .jpg. Browsers handle them fine, but older photo editors, some office software, many printers' upload pages, and plenty of government and job portals do not. Converting to JPG or PNG solves that in a second.
Notes on quality
- Converting to WebP or JPG uses high quality settings, so photos look the same while files shrink.
- Converting WebP to JPG fills any transparent areas with white. Choose PNG if you need to keep transparency.
- Converting cannot recover detail that was lost when the original was compressed.
- You can convert up to 50 images at once and download them individually or as a ZIP.
