iPhone Photos Won't Open or Upload? Convert HEIC to JPG
Updated 17 October 2026 · 5 min read
Why iPhones save HEIC files, how to turn them into JPG or PNG that open everywhere, and how to make them smaller without guessing the quality.
You take a photo on an iPhone, send it to your computer or try to upload it to a form, and it will not open, or the form says the file type is not allowed. The photo is fine. It is just saved in a format many places do not accept yet.
What HEIC is and why iPhones use it
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It stores a photo in about half the space of a JPG at similar quality, which saves storage on your phone. The catch is compatibility: many websites, application forms, Windows programs and older devices cannot open HEIC files.
Convert HEIC to JPG
- Open HEIC to JPG and add your photos. You can add many at once.
- Under Convert to, choose JPG (smaller, works everywhere).
- Convert, then download each photo or all of them as a ZIP.
The first conversion takes a few seconds while the decoder loads. After that it is quick.
To stop the problem for new photos, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats on your iPhone and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
When to choose PNG instead
PNG is lossless, so it is better if you plan to edit the image several times or a site only accepts PNG. The files are several times larger, though. If you already have a JPG and need a PNG, use JPG to PNG. Converting does not improve quality: it only stops further loss from repeated saving.
Make the JPG smaller without guessing
Phone photos are often 2–5 MB. If that is too big for an email or form, the Image Quality Optimizer compresses the photo at several quality levels, compares the sizes, and recommends the lowest one that still makes a worthwhile saving.
- Open Compare all quality levels to see every size side by side.
- Look at the recommended version at full size before using it, especially faces and text.
- With several photos, Download all recommended saves them as one ZIP.
Already know the quality you want? Set it directly in the Image Compressor. For an exact size in pixels and KB, follow the guide on resizing photos for forms.
Privacy
Photos are decoded and converted in your browser, so personal pictures and ID photos are never uploaded.
