What is a HEIC file?
Since iOS 11, iPhones and iPads save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPG at similar quality, which is great for your phone's storage but a problem elsewhere: many websites, application forms, Windows programs and older devices can't open HEIC files.
JPG or PNG?
- JPG is the right choice for almost everyone. It opens everywhere and keeps files small.
- PNG is lossless, for editing or archiving, but the files are several times larger.
To make your iPhone save new photos as JPG, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible.
