Let the tool find the sweet spot

Choosing a JPG quality by eye is guesswork. Lowering quality from 90% to 80% often cuts the file size dramatically, but below a certain point each step saves very little while the picture keeps getting worse. The optimizer compresses your image at 90, 80, 65, 50 and 35% quality, compares the sizes, and recommends the lowest setting that was still delivering a meaningful saving.

How the recommendation is made

Starting at 90%, the optimizer moves down one level at a time and keeps going only while each step saves more than about 8% compared with the previous one. As soon as a step saves less, the curve has flattened out; going further would cost quality for little gain, so it stops and recommends the last worthwhile level. You can still download any of the other results if you prefer.

Reading the results

  • Open Compare all quality levels under an image to see every size. A big drop between two levels means plenty of easy savings.
  • Download a level and look at it at full size, especially around text, faces and edges, before deciding.
  • Optimizing several images? Download all recommended saves the recommended version of each as one ZIP.
  • For important photos, choosing one level above the recommendation is a safe compromise.

Best results with JPG

Quality levels apply to JPG. PNG is saved losslessly by browsers, so each level comes out the same size and the optimizer will simply recommend the highest. For a PNG photo, convert it first with PNG to JPG, then optimize the JPG.
