How much to tip?
Tipping customs vary enormously from country to country, so check local practice when you travel. As a general guide:
| Where | Typical restaurant tip |
|---|---|
| United States and Canada | 15–20% is expected; tips are a large part of staff wages |
| United Kingdom and Ireland | 10–12.5%, often added as a service charge |
| Most of continental Europe | Round up, or about 5–10% for good service |
| Nepal and India | Around 10% if no service charge is included |
| Japan | Tipping is not customary and can cause confusion |
| Australia and New Zealand | Optional; around 10% for great service |
Check the bill first
Many restaurants already add a service charge, often 10%, and in some countries VAT or tax is listed separately. If service is included you do not need to tip on top unless you want to. Whether to tip on the amount before or after tax is a matter of local custom; tipping on the pre-tax amount is common in the United States.
For quick mental maths, 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left. Double it for 20%, or add half again for 15%.
