A quick technical check of any PDF
Before you upload a document to a portal, print it or send it to someone, it helps to know four basic things: how many pages it has, how big it is, which PDF version it uses, and whether it is encrypted. This tool reads those details from the file in your browser in a second or two. Add several PDFs to check them all at once; each gets its own card.
What each result tells you
- Page count. Useful for checking that a scan captured every page, or for working out page ranges for Split PDF.
- File size. Compare it with an upload or email limit. If it is over, Compress PDF can usually fix that.
- PDF version. A number like 1.4 or 1.7 shows which edition of the PDF format the file follows. Almost every modern reader opens all common versions; it matters mainly for very old software or strict archive requirements.
- Encrypted. Encryption is used for password protection and for permission restrictions, such as blocking printing or copying. Many tools, including several on this site, cannot change an encrypted PDF.
When a PDF is encrypted
If the checker reports encryption and the file opens without a password, it probably has an owner password that restricts editing. If it asks for a password to open, it has a user password. Either way, ask the person who created the document for an unrestricted copy. Removing protection from a document you do not own may break the terms under which you received it.
