What PDF metadata is

Besides its pages, a PDF carries a small set of descriptive fields: title, author, subject, keywords, the application that created it, the software that produced the final file, and the creation and modification dates. Readers show some of these (the title often appears in the browser tab) and search engines and document systems index them.

Why check it

  • Before you send a document. Metadata often contains the author's name or username from the computer that made the file, and an old title from a template. It is worth knowing what you are sharing.
  • To check where a file came from. The Creator and Producer fields show which program made the PDF, such as Microsoft Word, a scanner app or a print driver. That helps with troubleshooting formatting problems.
  • To check dates. Creation and modification dates help you tell which of two similar files is newer.
  • For publishing. A PDF on a website should have a sensible title, because search results and browser tabs use it.

Reading the fields

FieldWhat it usually contains
TitleThe document's name; may be left over from a template
AuthorThe person or account that created the file
Subject / KeywordsOptional descriptions, often empty
Creator applicationThe program the content was written in
ProducerThe library or driver that wrote the final PDF
Created / ModifiedTimestamps stored in the file, which can be wrong if the device clock was

You can add several PDFs at once; each one gets its own card. “Not set” simply means that field is empty, which is common and harmless. This viewer is read-only. To get a copy without the original metadata, you can rebuild the file, for example with Compress PDF, which creates a fresh document.
