How to Use
- 1Upload one or more PDF files.
- 2View a breakdown of pages, embedded objects and estimated size contributors for each.
Features
- File size and page count
- Embedded object count
- Suggestions for reducing size
- Compare multiple PDFs side by side
- No upload, 100% in-browser
Break down what's contributing to your PDF's file size, page count, embedded images, fonts and objects, entirely in your browser.
Find out why a PDF is so big
Two PDFs with the same number of pages can differ in size by a factor of a hundred. The difference is almost always what is embedded inside: photographs, scanned page images and fonts. The Size Analyzer opens the file in your browser and lists those embedded objects, so you can see where the space is going before deciding how to reduce it. Add several PDFs to compare them side by side.
Reading the results
- Embedded images and estimated image data. If image data makes up most of the file, compression will help a lot.
- Embedded fonts. Each font embedded in full can add tens or hundreds of kilobytes. Documents with many fonts, or with fonts for non-Latin scripts, can be surprisingly heavy even with no pictures.
- PDF objects. A very high object count compared with the page count can point to a file that has been edited and re-saved many times, or to complex vector drawings.
What to do next
| If the analysis shows… | Try |
|---|---|
| Images make up most of the size | Compress PDF at a lower level |
| A few pages hold most of the images | Remove or extract pages |
| Images are small but fonts are many | Re-export from the source app with font subsetting enabled |
| The file is small but the portal still rejects it | Check page count and encryption with the Information Checker |
When you create PDFs yourself, the biggest saving happens at the source. Resize photos to the size they will be shown before you insert them into the document. A 4000-pixel-wide photo shown at 10 cm wide wastes most of its data.
