How to Convert a PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint (and Keep It Editable)
Updated 16 October 2026 · 6 min read
Which converter to pick for letters, tables and slides, what comes through cleanly, and what to do with scanned pages.
A PDF is designed to look the same everywhere, not to be edited. When you need to update a CV, reuse a report or total a bank statement, converting it back into an Office file is usually the fastest route. The trick is picking the converter that matches what is on the page.
Pick the right converter
| The PDF contains | Convert with | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Letters, CVs, reports, articles | PDF to Word | Editable paragraphs with headings, bold and images |
| Tables, statements, invoices, price lists | PDF to Excel | Rows and columns, with numbers as real numbers |
| Handouts or a deck you want to present | PDF to PowerPoint | One slide per page, every line an editable text box |
Only need to change a date, a name or a few words? Skip the conversion and use Edit PDF, which changes the PDF directly and keeps its layout.
PDF to Word: rebuilding paragraphs
Inside a PDF, text is stored as separate lines placed at exact positions. PDF to Word joins those lines back into paragraphs, rejoins words that were hyphenated across lines, and keeps headings, bold, italic, fonts and centred text. Images are placed where they appeared, and each PDF page starts a new page in Word.
Files exported from Word, Google Docs and similar software convert best. Expect to tidy a few things in complex layouts with sidebars, text boxes or unusual fonts.
PDF to Excel: turning lines into cells
PDF to Excel reads each line of text as a row and splits it into cells where there is a wide gap. Values that line up down the page become columns. Amounts like 1,234.50, (500.00) and 12.5% arrive as real numbers you can sum and sort.
Choose One sheet per page to keep pages apart, or All pages in one sheet for a long statement you want to sort or total in one go.
PDF to PowerPoint: one page, one slide
Each page becomes a slide of the same size, with every line as a text box in its original spot and images where they were. It is a good starting point for turning a report or handout into a presentation. If you only need pictures of the pages for a slide, PDF to JPG is quicker.
Scanned PDFs
A scan is a photo of a page, so there is no text inside it to convert. By default, scanned pages come through as pictures so nothing goes missing. PDF to Word also has a Read text on scanned pages (English only) option that recognises the words. It is slower and the result needs checking, especially numbers and names.
Some scans already carry an invisible text layer, often called searchable PDFs. PDF to Excel uses that layer to fill the cells. For a pure picture scan of a statement, ask your bank for a PDF or CSV download instead.
Before you start
- Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked by their owner first.
- Check the converted file against the original, especially figures in tables.
- Everything runs in your browser, so contracts, payslips and statements are never uploaded.
