Check before you upload

Online applications, job portals and email providers often have strict size limits, typically somewhere between 100 KB and a few megabytes for images. Rather than uploading and waiting for an error, check the exact size here first, along with the format and pixel dimensions, which together explain why a file is the size it is. Add several images to see them in one table with their total size, which is handy when a form limits the combined size of all attachments.

KB, MB and why numbers sometimes differ

File sizes are counted in bytes. This tool, like most operating systems, uses 1 KB = 1024 bytes and 1 MB = 1024 KB. Some websites define 1 KB as 1000 bytes, so a file shown as 1.00 MB here is about 1.05 MB by that definition. If you are close to a limit, leave a small margin.

What makes an image file large

CauseFix
Very high pixel dimensions (e.g. 4000 × 3000)Resize to the size it will actually be shown
A photograph saved as PNGConvert to JPG or WebP
JPG saved at maximum qualityCompress at 70–85%
Unneeded borders or backgroundCrop them away

As a rough guide, a well-compressed 1200-pixel-wide JPG photo is usually 100–300 KB. If yours is several megabytes, one of the causes above almost certainly applies.

Need to hit a target like “under 200 KB”? Resize first, then compress. Reducing dimensions gives the biggest saving with the least visible change.
