Merge, Split, Extract or Remove? Choosing the Right PDF Page Tool
Updated 6 October 2026 · 5 min read
Four tools rearrange PDF pages in different ways. Learn which one fits your task, how page ranges work, and how to combine them for bigger jobs.
Most PDF chores come down to rearranging pages: joining files, breaking one apart, keeping a few pages or dropping a few. PDUtilities has a separate tool for each, and picking the right one saves steps.
| You want to… | Use | You get |
|---|---|---|
| Join several PDFs into one | Merge PDF | One file, pages in your chosen order |
| Break one PDF into several | Split PDF | Several files: per range, per page, or every N pages |
| Keep only certain pages | Page Extractor | One new file with just those pages |
| Delete certain pages | Page Remover | One new file without those pages |
How page ranges work
Split, Extract and Remove all take page numbers. The syntax is the same everywhere:
- A single page:
4 - A range:
2-6(pages 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6) - A list:
1, 3, 8-10 - For Split only, separate output files with a semicolon:
1-3; 4-7; 8-12makes three files.
Page numbers are positions in the file, starting at 1, which is not always the number printed in the footer. Reports often have a cover and contents pages before page “1”. Check by scrolling in your PDF viewer, which usually shows both.
Extract or remove?
They produce the same kind of result, so choose whichever is less typing. To keep 2 pages out of 40, extract 12, 13. To drop 2 pages out of 40, remove 12, 13. Your original file is never modified in either case.
Working with many files at once
All four tools accept several PDFs at a time. Merge combines them; Split, Extract and Remove process each file separately and let you download the results one by one or together as a ZIP. Extract and Remove also have an Apply to all box, so you can, for example, drop the cover page from twenty statements in one go.
Combining tools for bigger jobs
Example: building an application pack
- Convert photos of your certificates with JPG to PDF.
- Add your CV, the certificates and your bank statement to Merge PDF, and put them in order.
- In the statement's Pages box, type just the page you need, such as
3, then merge. - Compress the result with Compress PDF if the portal has a size limit.
Example: separating a batch scan
You scanned ten two-page invoices in one go and got a single 20-page PDF. In Split PDF, choose Every N pages, set it to 2, and you get ten files, ready to download as one ZIP. If the scanner added a blank page after each sheet, remove the blanks first with the Page Remover so every invoice is exactly two pages.
What these tools preserve
All four copy pages exactly as they are, so text stays selectable, images keep their quality and page sizes do not change. That makes them better than “Print to PDF” for this kind of work, which can rasterise content and change page sizes. Everything runs in your browser, so confidential documents stay on your device.
