Taking the photo

  • Stand about half a metre in front of a plain white or off-white wall, so there's no shadow behind you.
  • Face a window for soft, even light, and look straight at the camera with a neutral expression.
  • Ask someone to take it from about 1.5 metres away at eye level, rather than a selfie, so your face isn't distorted.
  • Glasses aren't allowed in US passport photos.
  • The digital photo is 1200 × 1200 px and kept under 240 KB for online applications.
